Rockwool Attic Insulation: The West Hollywood Owner’s Guide

Which Rockwool Models This Applies To

Rockwool’s mineral wool products for attics fall into three families, and getting the right one matters because the wrong density crushes in a vented attic or fails to meet Title 24’s R-value requirements for West Hollywood’s Climate Zone 9.

Comfortbatt is the batts-and-rolls line, color-coded by R-value: yellow (R-15, 3.5″), orange (R-23, 5.5″), green (R-30, 7.25″), and black (R-38, 9.25″). The black is what most West Hollywood homeowners need for attic floors, but 1940s Spanish Revival bungalows off Laurel Avenue often have true 2×8 joists that only accommodate the green. Comfortboard 80 is the rigid board, used for attic hatches, kneewalls, or cathedral ceiling assemblies where compressible batts won’t hold. AFB is the acoustical/fire line, occasionally specified in multi-family or ADU attic separations.

We don’t use proprietary part numbers. Rockwool labels every batt with density (0.7 to 8.0 PCF depending on product), R-value, and batch code. The compatibility gotcha in West Hollywood: Comfortbatt black (R-38) is nominally 9.25″, but actual measured thickness runs 9″ to 9.5″ depending on humidity at manufacture. Signs Your Rockwool Attic Insulation Is Failing

• Uneven temperatures room-to-room. Rockwool doesn’t settle like cellulose, but if it was installed over unsealed top plates or recessed can lights, conditioned air escapes around the insulation rather than through it. The batt itself looks fine from above; the failure is invisible until you blower-door the house.
• Spiking summer cooling costs. West Hollywood sees 15 to 20 days above 90°F most years, and attic temperatures in uninsulated or under-insulated spaces hit 140°F. Rockwool’s 2150°F melting point doesn’t help if the R-value was never adequate to begin with, or if the original installer used R-30 where R-38 was required.
• Visible moisture or mold on the attic side of drywall. Rockwool is hydrophobic and vapor-open, which is why we specify it near the coast, but if the attic isn’t vented per California Energy Code or if bathroom exhausts dump into the space, water condenses on cold surfaces the insulation never touches.
• Pest disturbance or rodent nesting. Unlike fiberglass, Rockwool doesn’t provide a comfortable nesting environment, but rats will tunnel through anything to get to a warm corner. We find this most often in hillside homes north of Sunset where mature tree canopies give roof access.
• Insulation age past 25 years with no air sealing. Rockwool itself doesn’t degrade, but the assembly fails around it. Gaps open at partition walls, wiring penetrations loosen, and the effective R-value of the whole system drops 30 to 40 percent even if the batts look pristine.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: measure your joist depth, confirm the existing insulation type, and photograph any visible gaps or disturbance. Rockwool is itch-resistant compared to fiberglass and doesn’t off-gas formaldehyde, but it’s not weightless. A 50-square-foot bundle of Comfortbatt R-38 weighs 28 pounds, and a West Hollywood attic in July is 120°F by 10 a.m.

Where DIY goes wrong: compressing batts into undersized cavities (loses R-value), leaving top plates unsealed (loses the R-value you just paid for), and missing fire-blocking requirements at dropped soffits or chimney chases.
